COG VI is proud to recognize Dr. Kniquiah Hughes for representing the Caribbean at the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) 37th General Assembly Meeting (GAM) in Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Hughes attended in her role as President of the Association of Caribbean Occupational Therapists, joining a global network of over 100 occupational therapy delegates from across the world.
The WFOT General Assembly Meeting is a major international forum where member countries gather to celebrate progress and address key priorities shaping the future of occupational therapy. This year’s discussions focused on major areas of impact—advocacy, research, education, and professional practice—with member delegates collaborating to identify solutions, share strategies, and vote on actions that guide the organization’s priorities and partnerships worldwide.
A Global Meeting With Real-World Impact
The strength of WFOT is its ability to convene leaders committed to improving health outcomes and advancing occupational therapy as a profession. Delegates engaged in meaningful conversations and collaborative problem-solving sessions—work that supports both global direction and local relevance.
As Dr. Hughes shared, the outcomes of the assembly extend beyond discussion. Delegates contributed to shaping:
- Global advocacy strategies that increase access and recognition for occupational therapy
- Sustainability efforts that help strengthen services in diverse healthcare systems
- Future directions that ensure OT remains responsive to changing societal needs
Key Takeaways for Occupational Therapy in the Caribbean
One of the most meaningful takeaways from Dr. Hughes’ participation was the growing need to strengthen advocacy and collaboration across regions, particularly in areas facing similar development challenges.
Across many countries, occupational therapists are navigating common barriers such as:
- workforce development needs
- program expansion challenges
- professional recognition and policy support
For the Caribbean, this represents an important opportunity to continue building strong regional partnerships, invest in education and accreditation pathways, and align with global efforts to keep occupational therapy services accessible, sustainable, and community-centered.
Partnerships That Strengthen Wellbeing
Dr. Hughes emphasized a continued openness to interdisciplinary partnerships that support health and wellbeing through participation in “meaningful occupations”—the everyday activities people want, need, or are expected to do. This vision aligns with the heart of rehabilitation: helping individuals maintain independence, improve function, and live fuller lives.
While the WFOT GAM has concluded, the work continues. The relationships formed, collaborations strengthened, and priorities set will support ongoing progress toward a thriving occupational therapy profession—globally and throughout the Caribbean.
COG VI celebrates Dr. Hughes’ leadership and commitment to ensuring Caribbean occupational therapy remains recognized, valued, and equipped to meet the needs of our communities.
