During a stem cell therapy procedure, your doctor will extract stem cells from your bone marrow. These stem cells are then concentrated before being injected into the treatment site. After the injection, the stem cells may assist in the healing of your condition or injury. This procedure typically takes less than an hour and is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you will not have to remain for an overnight stay.
Stem cell therapy can be used to treat many injuries and conditions, including:
- Articular cartilage injuries
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Degenerative disc disease
- Degenerative joint disease
- Herniated discs
- Labral tears
- Partial rotator cuff tears
- Pinched nerves
- Trigger fingers
Stem Cell Therapy Treatment Process
During stem cell therapy, your doctor will begin by numbing the area of extraction. Stem cells or bone marrow will be extracted, typically from the pelvis or hip bone. A suctioned syringe will then be used to collect the sample. The sample is filtered and sent through a centrifuge before being introduced to the site of the injury.
The process of undergoing stem cell therapy takes around two hours in total and is performed as an outpatient procedure.
Potential Side Effects
Bone marrow therapy typically comes with a low chance of adverse side effects, since the substances used within the treatment are coming from your own body as opposed to an outside source. Some patients experience slight pain or discomfort after the injection, which typically resolves in a few days and can be reduced with aspirin or ibuprofen.
Patients may experience swelling and discomfort at the injection site for 2-3 days after treatment. Within the following 2-6 weeks, patients tend to experience increased strength and stability as well as decreased pain. Additional benefits are often felt 6 weeks to 3 months afterward. It is recommended to maintain your activity level and participate in a rehabilitation program during this time.
