Many patients find themselves suffering from neck pain at one point or another. In many cases, neck pain is not severe and, though annoying, is typically bearable. Minimal neck pain can be caused by poor posture or an ineffective sleeping position.
However, intense or recurring neck pain may be the sign of a more serious condition. If you find that you are experiencing neck pain along with any of the following symptoms, it is recommended that you see a neck specialist in the Virgin Islands for evaluation:
- Radiating pain shooting down to the hand or arm
- Weakness occurring in the hand or arm
- Sensitivity or sensory disturbance in the legs or arms
- Numbness or clumsiness in the hand or arm
Many less severe cases of neck pain will resolve themselves. However, there can be severe consequences in failing to address a more serious neck condition or injury. If left untreated, these conditions can cause further damage to the neck, potentially leading to chronic pain, numbness, or weakness. It is highly recommended to reach out to a next specialist for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
Neck Surgery
Neck surgery will likely never be the first option for treating your neck pain. Often, neck surgery is considered a last resort if more traditional treatment methods are not reducing or eliminating your pain. Some more severe neck conditions, such as compression of the spinal cord or a pinched nerve, may require surgery.
One of the most common types of surgery for spinal cord compression or pinched nerves is anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion, also known as ACDF. During this surgery, an incision is made at the front of the neck and the disc causing pressure will be removed.
A similar surgery for treating spinal cord compression is anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion, or ACCF. This surgery does not involve the removal of a disc, but instead, part of the front section of the vertebra is removed and is filled in with a small piece of bone.
Common surgeries for relieving pressure on the spinal cord and its associated nerves include laminectomy and laminoplasty. In the case of a pinched nerve, artificial disc replacement (ADR) surgery may be necessary. You and your neck surgeon will work together to determine which of these options is best for your individual case.
